Legal Nurse Consulting
As defined by the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC), "The primary role of the legal nurse consultant is to evaluate, analyze, and render informed opinions on the delivery of health care and the resulting outcomes." Legal nurse consultants act as liaisons between the legal and healthcare communities by applying thorough understanding of medical issues and trends to the litigation process. With over 40 years as a Registered Nurse, Susan has significant clinical experience in reviewing medical records, documents, and medical-legal issues. Using her nursing background and knowledge of health care systems helps Susan to identify strengths and weaknesses of cases in both plaintiff and defense focus. Her associates bring additional experience and expertise in their various specialty areas.
As a rehabilitation RN, case manager, and life care planner, Susan Wirt has the obligation and duty as a citizen to serve the public interest by providing expert testimony only in litigations where issues appropriate to her training and expertise are involved.
Typical legal nurse consulting activities include:
- identifying possible breeches in standards of care and regulatory requirements
- conducting research and summarizing medical literature
- preparing detailed chronologies of medical events to assist attorneys with case-relevant issues
- educating attorneys regarding medical facts and issues relevant to the case
- assisting with depositions and trials (in testimony, preparation of exhibits, and identifying expert witnesses)
- organizing medical records and other medically-related litigation materials
