Wirt & Associates, LLC

Life Care Planning, Legal Nurse Consulting
& Comprehensive Case Management

Susan Wirt

After completing nursing school in 1977, Susan Wirt began her clinical experience in adult critical care. She practiced in several major medical centers throughout the United States, then in the early 1980’s began her career in case management and life care planning. She spent the first seven years working with a regional company but by 1991, Susan realized that a personal touch was missing from the large corporation’s approach. The next two years were spent with a rehabilitation facility, enhancing and refining her clinical and marketing skills. Wirt & Associates, LLC was launched in the summer of 1994 and has been growing carefully since then.

Susan obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2004, graduating summa cum laude. She completed her Masters Degree in Nursing, with an emphasis in clinical education from Jefferson College of Health Sciences (JCHS) in May 2013. She was a member of the JCHS adjunct faculty where she taught rehabilitation nursing, health policy, leadership, and patient/client education. After JCHS and Radford University merged in 2019, Susan continued her adjunct facility role and primarily teaches in the RN-BSN program.

Susan is nationally certified as a Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN), Case Manager (CCM), and a Life Care Planner (CLCP), as well as being certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Rehabilitation Provider (CRP).

As the primary service provider with Wirt & Associates, LLC, Susan provides medical-legal consultations, medical case management and life care planning services to insurance carriers, employers, attorneys and families throughout the United States. Special cases have even taken her to Canada and Germany for her particular expertise. Her network of professional nurses includes doctorate prepared nurse educators, a long-term home care nurse manager, and several hospital-based practitioners. Additional consulting specialists include a special education consultant and a medical device specialist.

A gifted public speaker, she has spoken at numerous regional, national and international educational conferences and is a dynamic, highly sought-after presenter. She was invited to speak at the Portuguese rehabilitation nursing educational conference in Lisbon in 2011.

In May 2015 Susan was honored to be name as one of the "Influential Women of Virginia," an awards program that recognized the outstanding efforts of women in Virginia, in all professional areas of practice, including health care, law, business, education and the arts. This honor is given to individuals who are making notable contributions to professions, communities, and society at large.

Susan was also chosen to receive the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN). This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to rehabilitation nursing and to ARN.

In 2011, she received the Case Manager of the Year award from ARN and later that year was elected president of ARN. During her term as president, she was very active in the Health Policy committee of the organization, making numerous trips to Washington DC to meet with legislators regarding issues affecting not only nurses and care givers but our national health care debate.
